My ideal is to be one with my soul. My dream is to connect with the world’s soul and contribute something good to the world. In that dream, my companies will be just a launching platform, just like your company can be. It is not about being the best in the world, it is about connecting. [The New Leadership, Migchels]
In many religious, philosophical and mythological traditions, there is a belief in the essence of a living being called the soul. Soul or psyche are the mental abilities of a living being: reason, character, feeling, consciousness, memory, perception, thinking etc. Anima Mundi is the concept of a world soul connecting all living organisms on planet Earth. The ancient Greeks used the word alive for the concept of being ensouled, indicating that the earliest surviving western philosophical view believed that the soul was that which gave the body life.
In today’s world we might be close to a tipping point. An increasing number of people are negative about large companies and organisations. These giants are often perceived as obstacles than as drivers of change. Many people sense that the current way in which we run organisations has been stretched to its limits. Merely one third of all employees are engaged in their work, while 43% are detached or actively disengaged, and 22% feel unsupported (Reinventing Organisations, Laloux).
Employees are getting fed up because corporations have become soulless. Opportunism, fear, and stress are on the rise. Fear has become so pervasive that many of us don’t even recognise it anymore (Fijlstra). Laloux writes that the Dilbert cartoons and the TV-series The Office could become cultural icons says a lot about the extent to which organisations can make work miserable and pointless. An excellent point.
What if we make a change?
What if we make a change? What if we moved into a different direction? From top-down to shared leadership? From structured and controlled management to self management? From distrust to trust? From a focus on numbers to a focus on connecting?
These improved organisations or co-entrepreneurs are characterised by strong values, purpose comes first. And the development of people will lead to personal growth, personal growth will lead to permanent intrinsic motivation and greater quality. And our customers will notice. People like connecting to our purpose, to our Why (Sinek), and it will work like a magnet on new employees (Vos).
